# Soft skill vetting

At Lemon.io, soft skills are evaluated at two distinct stages of the vetting process — as a separate, equally weighted vetting filter along with tech proficiency.

* **Soft skills & English interview**

A 40-minute live interview with a recruiter covering English fluency, communication clarity, professional conduct, and CV verification. This is a conversation — not a written test or a self-assessment form.

* **Communication within the technical interview**

The technical interview opens with a short small-talk stage. Developers who struggle with casual conversation — even if technically strong — do not pass. The rationale: effective communication is essential to remote collaboration, and it cannot be faked in an interview setting.

**What is assessed across both stages:**

* English fluency, written and spoken. The standard required is clear professional communication — sufficient to handle async written discussions, video standups, and technical;
* Communication under pressure;
* Self-management and reliability — the vetting process spans approximately two weeks and involves multiple touchpoints. Candidates who are slow to respond, miss scheduled calls, or fail to follow through on commitments are eliminated;
* CV integrity;
* Collaboration style. How a developer describes past teamwork, handles disagreement, and communicates blockers is evaluated. The goal is to identify developers who can integrate into a client’s existing team.

**What does not automatically disqualify a candidate:**

**Interview nerves.** Candidates who have strong experience but struggle with small talk or show visible nerves are still given a fair assessment. Lemon.io provides interview preparation support for developers who need it.

**Accent or non-native English.** Clarity and comprehension matter — not accent or grammatical perfection. Developers from 70+ countries are in the network.

Note that soft skills are not treated as a secondary filter at Lemon.io. The platform’s clients are primarily startups with small teams, where a single miscommunication or missed message can delay an entire sprint.

Every developer in the network is expected to communicate proactively, manage their own time, and flag blockers early — without being prompted.
